Thingvellir National Park
We visit the place where the two tectonic plates, the north american and the eurasian plate, are moving away from each other. You can see an impressing fissure and the biggest natural lake in Iceland hosting a great variety of fish and bird life. Furthermore at Thingvellir the Icelanders founded their parliament in 930 A.C. where the chieftains had their annual meeting every summer. The name “Thingvellir” translates to “Parliament Plains”
The melting water from Iceland´s second biggest glacier falls into a deep canyon forming the majestic “Golden Falls”. On a sunny day you will even see the glacier Langjökull in the distance and have a rainbow in the mist of the waterfall.
The Geysir geothermal area hosts hundreds of colorful hot springs and two geysers, erupting hot springs. One is called “Geysir” and name giving for all the geysers in the world. It erupts today very seldom. The other geyser one is called “Strokkur” and erupts every 5 minutes up to 40 meters.
Ice Cream Farm
We will stop at the farm Efstidalur where the owners produce ice cream from the milk of their cows. Troll Expeditions will invite you to taste the ice cream yourself and meanwhile watch the animals relaxing in the stable.
Faxi waterfall is small but beautiful. It is situated in the Tungufljót river which is a famous salmon river. Sometimes you can see salmon jumping in the waterfall and in the salmon staircase right next to it. Fishermen are often trying their luck at the waterfall in the summer months.
A stunning volcanic crater with a lake in the middle which formed in an eruption 3.000 years ago. The former believe that it formed in a vast explosion was withdrawn by most scientists. The more likely theory is that the volcanic cone collapsed into it’s own magma chamber after the eruption was finished.
